In a recent interview, he discussed his observations about the current state of anime production in Japan and shared his thoughts on how the industry can innovate to stay relevant in a rapidly changing market. Maruyama’s insights provide a unique perspective on the challenges facing the anime industry and the potential opportunities for growth and innovation in the future.

According to Maruyama, The Japan Times, “In Japan, people are no longer trained in animation. The only reason China hasn’t quite caught up with Japan yet is because of a bunch of restrictions imposed on free expression there.”

Maruyama Warns of China’s Threat to Anime Dominance

During an interview with American Foreign Press News (AFP) to promote his upcoming Netflix series Pluto, Mappa and M2 animation studios founder and Madhouse co-founder Maso Maruyama warned that the Japanese anime industry is actively on the verge of being overtaken by rising Chinese competitors due to overall commercialism that has stifled creativity.

Mushiyo, a freelance animator at the renowned Japanese animation studio MAPPA, recently criticized the studio for prioritizing quantity over quality and failing to train its animation team properly. Meanwhile, China has been heavily investing in developing new animators, putting pressure on Japan’s anime industry to adapt and innovate.

Anime has become a significant part of Japan’s cultural heritage and a vital component of the country’s economy, generating billions of dollars in revenue annually. However, the rise of competitors like China has made it clear that the Japanese anime industry cannot rest on its laurels and must continue to evolve and innovate to stay ahead of the curve.
