BLEACH: TYBW Part 1 Recap

After a spate of Hollow killings and numerous disappearances in the Rukongai District, the Thousand-Year Blood War narrative begins in earnest when it is discovered that the Quincy were truly alive. To refresh your recall, The Quincy is the group of reishi-manipulating human mediums who slaughter Hollows rather than purify them as Soul Society does. Except for the Ishida family, it was believed that they were all mass-murdered by the Soul Society a thousand years ago.

It was instead discovered that the Quincy, under the leadership of its creator and Soul King’s son, Yhwach, had really employed reishi to conceal themselves in the Shadow Area of Seireitei. After defeating Aizen, they gathered their strength under the name Wandenreich—German for “invisible empire”—and finally took over Hueco Mundo. They came forward and proclaimed war on Soul Society. Yhwach intended to do this while also absorbing and killing his father, the Soul King, and reshaping the whole universe into a new kingdom. Uryu was chosen as Yhwach’s successor and heir because he had joined the Wandenreich to exact revenge on Soul Society for killing his mother.
